Have you wondered if your child might benefit from ADHD medications, but have been afraid to give it a try? The following questions and answers will help you decide if you’re ready to make this move.
What exactly is ADHD? Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a common affliction that can be treated with both environmental controls and prescription medications. ADHD can impede academic and social performance.
How can you tell if your child has ADHD? ADHD usually presents in one of two ways (although sometimes with both)--inattentive or hyperactive ADHD. If your child had inattentive ADHD, your child probably has trouble finishing tasks, paying attention, and being responsible. Children with hyperactive ADHD have trouble sitting still, controlling impulses, and restraining their bodies and mouths. It's common for a child with inattentive ADHD to also have hyperactive ADHD, but it's very possible to only display characterists from one or the other.
Does your child have ADHD? You can go straight to your family physician and ask to try ADHD medications, or you can go to a school official or psychiatrist for an evaluation and diagnosis. Unless your child has other health issues that will interact poorly with the ADHD drugs, you should be able to give the medications a try just to see if you like the results or not. In most cases, children respond positively to ADHD meds immediately, so you'll know right away (within the first day) if the meds are good for your child or not.
What do ADHD medications do? Almost all ADHD medications are in the stimulant category. You'd thnk a stimulant would send an ADHD child through the roof, but instead, these particular drugs help ADHD kids slow down and pay attention. These drugs make your brain produce extra epinephrine and dopamine; they also improve blood flow to the brain. They also inhibit your body’s dopamine and epinephrine uptakers, meaning your brain has access to these two chemicals longer.
What should you expect to see from your child if the ADHD medications really are right for him or her? If ADHD medications are right for your child, you’ll see increased ability to focus and a mellowing effect. While it may take a while to get the dosage and type of medication right, you should see improvements right away if the medicine is right for your child.
Don’t be afraid to bring your child in for an evaluation. It won't take long to figure out if the medication is right for your child or not.
